How do you become a freelance writer?
And once you get started, how do you reach six figures and beyond?
Aaron Orendorff billed $19k in January. That’s on pace for a $200k year. What could you do with that sort of money?
In this interview for The Overpaid Writer’s Club, Aaron Orendorff explains how he hit six figures within his very first year of freelance writing and discusses the key differences between getting paid $50 to write an article and getting paid $1,500.

Loved this interview, so many to the point & honest tips! I’m just reading “Everybody Writes” so I’ll keep an eye out for Aaron’s post 😀
Thanks Camilla and ooh good choice! Ann is awesome 🙂
This is great inside, it spurs me up to do great things. But sourcing out clients can be a hard knock to crack. What do you do in such cases. Or do you prefer copywriters to rely on repeating clients?
I really like offering a mixture of copywriting and content writing. The content writing tends to turn into recurring contracts, which is great for income stability, and the copywriting can produce some really great one-off payments.
Most of my copywriting clients come through organic searches finding my website. Most of my blogging clients come through seeing my guest blogs and paid assignments on other blogs and wanting something similar.
Awesome lessons! I like the part where you guys talk about getting a gig that is beyond one’s current scope of ability then working hard to deliver.
I have discovered that fear is the one major obstacle that is holding many freelancers back.
Thanks Jacob and Aaron for this.
Very true Kato. If you want to scale up your income quickly, you definitely have to be willing to put yourself out there and trust yourself to make it happen when the opportunities open up.
Jacob, this is awesome. Thanks Jacob for sharing.
Your page is always at the top or on the first page when I search information related to copywriting. This means that you have invested well in SEO copywriting.
Do you have an article on how you did this?
Good eye! It’s a combination of on-page optimization (https://backlinko.com/on-page-seo) and then a TON of guest posting with links pointing back to the pages I want to rank for.
Hi Jacob and Aaron,
Loved the interview man. Some quality tips. The info at the end about scaling up was an eye opener for me. Ghost drafters…something I definitely need to explore. How and where do you find these people?
Cheers,
Man
