90% Of Writers Will Never Make It Past These 3 Hurdles

Thank you, Jacob. I landed my first client from cold pitching thanks to your training. Best money I’ve ever spent. Thank you for all you do.

- Stella Inabo

For just this week, I’ve already booked more than $1,200 with about 5 different clients. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see where this freelance path takes me.

- Donny Karr

Not only have I learned a lot, I’ve landed my first client. 2 weeks into my learning I was able to pitch and win. A big part of that is due to this course. I can’t wait to keep growing.

The #1 challenge that most freelance writers face is LANDING CLIENTS.

But what if you could go out and land a new client ANY TIME you wanted to?

What if you could snap your fingers and add an extra $1,000 of income on command?

What if getting new freelance writing clients was as simple as completing a checklist?

Featured in:

Hi, my name is Jacob McMillen, and I’m a six-figure freelance copywriter, content strategist, and writing mentor.

These days, if you Google the word “copywriter” in the US, I’ll show up most days as the #1 result (see for yourself).

That has nothing to do with YOU getting clients on command, but I only have about 30 seconds to convince you I’m not full of shit, and since every copywriter on Earth wants that ranking, but I’m the only one who actually has it, I figured that’s a good place to start.

In order to help you get clients on command, we need to head back to 2015, when I was a young warthog relatively new freelancer.

Most freelance writers think there is a hidden secret to landing clients (it actually couldn’t be simpler).

In 2015, I had a life-changing moment that I’m not going to dramatize at all.

It was the worst moment of my life.

(It was a minor setback that I’m going to dramatize)

I lost my job for the 3rd time.

(I lost one of my clients… my biggest client… but still just one)

I moved back into my parent’s house.

(I visited my parents and slept in their guest room for a week)

I had no income…

(I had some income)

And my wedding, which I was funding myself, was just two months away.

(four months)

I didn’t know what to do.

(I believed that if I sent out enough great pitches, I could land a few clients)

I had no experience to leverage.

(I had two years of part-time experience)

I was all out of options

(because nothing says “out of options” like a healthy, 25-year-old man living in America)

So I took a risk…

(pretty sure I have to include “risk” somewhere)

And launched my copywriting business.

(sent out an absolute ****load of pitches)

It wasn’t easy.

(I woke up this morning. The sun sets at dusk. You are reading words.)

But over the next year…

(two years)

I managed to build my freelance writing business to $160k per year.

($130k net)

How?

(dramatic pause)

By focusing on giving.

(It was really that ****load of pitches though)

Want to succeed?

(Rhetorical question ftw)

Give!

(Pitch like crazy)

Most freelancers think there is a hidden secret to landing clients. They think that if they can just discover how it’s done, they can land the clients they need.

And this plays right into the training being sold to them, along with the mountain of new tricks, tips and techniques coming at them each day.

But it’s all just distractions.

The truth is that there is only one way to get clients in your first year as a freelance writer.

You have to go out and pitch.

You have to go out and put yourself in front of potential clients.

Now, you might think you just read, “You have to go out and sell.”

But that’s not what I said.

There’s a reason you’ve probably come across a billion people calling themselves “copywriters” over the last year.

And if there is any “hidden secret” to be found in client acquisition, it’s what I’m about to tell you.

Most freelance writers think they need to convince people to hire them (here’s why they’re WRONG!).

Here’s a secret about copywriting.

You don’t actually need to sell it.

Most freelance copywriters think the goal of pitching is to go out and convince people to buy from them.

And as a result, they hate doing it.

But you don’t actually need to sell copywriting to business owners marketers.

THEY ALREADY KNOW THEY NEED IT!

The reason copywriting is such a lucrative service is because every business needs it, and a massive segment of them KNOW they need it.

It’s kind of like being a doctor.

Do doctors sell you on their services?

No.

Everyone needs to go to the doctor at some point, and when they do, it works like this.

You need the doctor’s help.

You go to the doctor.

You pay what it costs.

Done.

The same is true for copywriting, IF you know how to pitch correctly.

The goal isn’t to sell. The goal is simply to FIND and connect with the people who already know they need copywriting.

And when having a “sales” discussion with them, IF you know what you’re doing, you don’t need to sell them on copywriting or even on YOU as the service provider. You simply have to diagnose their need, tell them the solution, and accept payment.

When someone has to be educated to understand their need for your writing, any payment they are willing to dig out is going to be minimal.

Don’t waste your time on these prospects.

When someone understands that they need copywriting and how it is going to grow their business, they aren’t just willing to pay accordingly… they are actively seeking to invest in great writing.

If you are trying to convince someone to invest in your writing services, you are wasting time that could be spent finding people who already know they need you.

And that’s important, because…. math.

Most freelance writers don’t truly understand that pitching is a numbers game (let’s do the math).

You’ve probably heard this before.

You’ve heard it about dating.

You’ve heard it about sales.

You’ve heard it about pitching.

“It’s a numbers game.”

But hearing it and understanding it are two different things.

Let’s say you had a prospect list of 1,000 potential copywriting clients. And let’s say 100 of the people on this list are willing to hire a copywriter for a $1,000 project.

If you manage to pitch everyone on this list over the next 6 months, you will walk away with $100,000.

The law of averages tells us that for every 10 people you pitch, you will land one client.

A lot of freelancers never even make it to 10 pitches on that list.

They try a few times and then give up.

But for those who do make it to 10 pitches, many discover that statistics, random chance, and real life don’t always line up with the law of averages.

Theoretically, you could pitch 900 people on that list without closing one sale.

At that point, you’d be 100 pitches away from $100k, but you wouldn’t know it.

In reality, what often happens is a combination of bad luck and human error:

  • You just happen to send your first 30 pitches out to all duds.
  • You forget to follow up on the pitch that would have been a sure sale.
  • You get in front of eager clients but your pitch is so long and confusing, it keeps them from hiring you.
  • You hear back from someone ready to hire you and then lose the sale by being indecisive and unclear.

And here’s the crazy part.

You don’t have to be particularly good at pitching.

Most new writers do it wrong simply because they don’t know any better, but it’s actually really easy when you know how to do it right. In fact, it’s a lot easier doing it the RIGHT way than it is doing it the WRONG way!

And once you are sending out the right types of pitches, you begin to understand what pitching being a “numbers game” really means.

It means you can go out and land a new client ANYTIME you want to.

It means you can snap your fingers and add an extra $1,000 of income on command.

It means that getting new writing clients is as simple for you as completing a few steps on a checklist.

That’s what I want to teach you… and for such a ridiculously cheap price, you’re going to wonder why I spent so much time writing this page.

Learn how to send pitches that get opened, read, and responded to in any writing niche.

It’s really easy to send a great pitch that people will respond to.

It’s also really easy to send a terrible pitch that even a “sure thing” customer will delete immediately.

The problem is that most freelancers try WAY too hard.

They think they need to write a book. Or they try to keep their pitch concise and forget to include the important stuff.

They think they need to be hyper honest about their lack of skills. Or they think they need to pretend they have skills that they don’t actually have.

They think they need to compare themselves to other copywriters. Or they think they need have a long list of past results.

A good pitch has NONE of those things.

It’s simple… stupid simple.

But just like great copywriting, it’s STRATEGIC. Every single word is placed with purpose, and there are no extra or uncessary words.

In Clients NOW Masterclass, I will show you EXACTLY how to write your pitch.

And this isn’t just theory.

I’ll show you the exact pitches I used to land clients when I was still early in my career… with no experience… no credentials… not even a single relevant post to point to and say, “See, I can deliver.”

I’ll also show you the pitches my students are using right now to land clients through LinkedIn and email outreach.

If you want to skip past the “OMG nobody responds to any of my pitches” phase no with certainty that you are sending the right pitch, you need Clients NOW Masterclass.

Learn how to find new people, brands, and businesses to pitch to week in and week out.

One of the things I hear ALL THE TIME from freelancers when I tell them to pitch is, “But where do I find people to pitch?”

This is called “prospecting” and in some ways, it’s the hardest part of pitching.

Most people don’t struggle to list out a hundred or so prospects, but after that, many will find themslves hard pressed to identify more potential clients.

I get it.

I’ve been there.

And that’s why I’ve put together a laundry list of places to find clients, along with my process for identifying new prospects week in and week out, until the day I fall over and drop dead from old age.

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “Okay, but who do I pitch?” you need Clients NOW Masterclass.

Learn how to work WITH your personality instead of constantly fighting against your own psyche.

I told you earlier that there is only one way to get clients.

You have to go out and pitch them.

But here’s the thing.

HOW you go and pitch them is entirely up to you.

And while I’m all about the “suck it up and do it” style of teaching, the truth is that there are multiple options for successful pitching, and one of them is likely going to fit your personality.

Do you hate sales calls?

You can pitch and land clients without sales calls.

Do you hate email outreach?

You can pitch and land clients without email outreach.

I’ve helped over a thousand writers land new clients over the last few years, and I can tell you with certainty that there is a way for you to pitch that doesn’t make you want to blow your brains out.

If you’ve ever hated pitching so much that you’ve found yourself questioning if freelancing is really for you, you need Clients NOW Masterclass.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I launch a freelance writing business even if I’m not an expert in any particular field?

100% yes.The only thing you need to launch your business is the ability to deliver one of the following services:

  • website copywriting
  • email copywriting
  • blog writing

You’ll probably suck at these at first. Everyone does. But you just have to be able to do it and then you learn as you practice on low paying gigs.

Does Clients NOW Masterclass include live support or followup?

This masterclass is DIY and intended to provide you with everything you need to succeed on your own. I am always available to answer questions, and I go out of my way to provide in-depth answers for students, but outside of that, there is no formal support system attached to this course.

The goal of this course is to supply the right information and focus for a low, fixed cost, and then once you’ve demonstrated you have the initiative by getting your business off the ground, we offer Write Minds for more ongoing support, learning, and camaraderie.

I’m not a native English speaker. Can I succeed as an English focused freelance writer?

The answer to this will be based entirely on how well you’ve mastered the English language and what price point you are aiming for. The good news is that the best copywriting is very simple. It’s not grammatically difficult and it doesn’t use a large vocabulary. In fact, native English speakers with a literary background often struggle to simplify their writing enough to succeed in this business.

I’ve worked with numerous non-native speakers who are absolutely killing it, including several who are doing six-figures and more. So the answer is yes, it’s possible to succeed, but whether your English is currently good enough is something I wouldn’t be able to say for sure until I’ve personally assessed your writing.
